Dec. 17 last day to send mail to service members

by Nicole Rodman

As Perry Como once sang, there‚Äôs no place like home for the holidays.
For members of the U.S. military stationed overseas, however, the holidays will likely be spent thousands of miles away from home.
For these service members, a gift, card or care package from home can light up the holiday.
To this end, the United States Postal Service (USPS) is reminding customers that the last day to send mail to service members to ensure delivery by Christmas is Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Though the deadlines for sending holiday mail via standard post, parcel airlift mail, priority mail and first-class have already passed, customers can still send packages and letters via priority mail express military service by Dec. 17 to ensure delivery by Dec. 25.
USPS is also offering a $2-per-box discount on the largest size Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes for packages being sent to Air/Army Post Office (APO), Fleet Post Office (FPO) and Diplomatic Post Office (DPO) destinations across the globe.
The cost for each of the Priority Mail APO/FPO Flat Rate boxes is $14.85.
Priority Mail Express Military Service is only available to certain military or diplomatic post offices. Customers are encouraged to consult with their local post office for more information.
In an effort to assist customers with putting together care packages for service members overseas, USPS is also offering a Military Care Kit.
The kit contains four flat rate boxes, tape, address labels and customs forms.
To address military packages, customers must include the full name, unit and APO/FPO/DPO address (including nine digit  ZIP code) of the service member. A return address must also be included.
For domestic mail and packages, the deadline to ensure delivery by Christmas is Saturday, Dec. 14, for standard post, Friday, Dec. 20, for first-class mail, Saturday, Dec. 21, for priority mail and Monday, Dec. 23, for priority mail express.
