Dundalk Memories theme of 76th parade by Randy Leonard
As of the time of this writing, the forecast for Saturday calls for a beautiful clear morning that will give way to a sunny day with temperatures below the scorching 90s of past weeks.
Fairly ideal conditions for the 76th annual Dundalk Heritage Independence Day Parade, the theme of which is “Dundalk Memories.” A horse, cows and farm equipment will bring to mind the area’s agricultural history. Maryland Army National Guard members from the Dundalk Armory will again participate with whatever members and equipment it can, something that parade organizer Pat Herman is happy about. Of course, the parade – sponsored by the Heritage Association of Dundalk and the Dundalk Heritage Parade Committee and hosted by the Optimist Club of Dundalk – will kick off with fire engines and trucks around 8:15 a.m. and will include music groups and veterans organizations. World War II veterans who have previously ridden on an amphibious DUKW vehicle had to find alternative transportation this year with the closing of Baltimore’s Ride the Ducks business, veteran Harry Young said last week. Some of the new entries this year include the Maryland Paranormal Research Team and the Charm City Roller Girls, Herman said Tuesday. Given that it is an election year, political candidates are planning to travel the route including former Maryland governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., Baltimore County executive candidates Joseph Bartenfelder and Kevin Kamenetz, state senatorial candidate Jordan Hadfield and state delegate hopeful Todd Crandell. Seeking to avoid placing candidates for the same office too near each other in the lineup takes some jockeying to get them into the mix, Herman said. Gov. Martin O’Malley, who did not participate last year, is expected to be there Saturday, she said. A handful of politicians have not responded and are not listed in the lineup, though they will be welcome to participate if they show up, Herman said. Four A-10 Thunderbolts from Martin State Airport’s Warfield Air National Guard are scheduled to fly over between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Luckily, the parade has not been hit by significant foul weather thus far, Herman said, adding, “It will not rain on our parade.” 76th annual Dundalk Heritage Parade lineup • Information supplied by the Heritage Association of Dundalk (sponsors) and the Optimist Club of Dundalk (hosts).
